This series consists of records concerning suits involving the Alien Property Custodian or property seized by the Custodian. Included are correspondence, memorandums, briefs, court transcripts and orders, and other papers used in trying suits in which the Custodian and the Treasurer of the United States were usually defendants. The suits were brought in a variety of courts and generally sought restitution for seized property above that already paid according to provisions of the Trading with the Enemy Act or any subsequent legislation. Appendix four is an alphabetical list of plaintiffs and some defendants in these cases. The records were maintained by the Legal Section and its predecessors. Some of these records are in German.
